Spray a little Pledge furniture polish onto the scratched CD, then gently wipe it all off with a soft micropore cloth (the kind used for eyeglasses). Just like on furniture, the clear wax should fill in the scratches and make the CD playable.

If the DVD surface feels sticky or greasy, mix some baby shampoo in lukewarm water and use cotton or soft cloth to gently rub the CD surface with this solution. Make sure the CD is completely dry (no water drops) before putting it back in the jewel case.

Cell phone speed dial wallpaper

Can't remember which one of your contacts you assigned to speed dial #6 on your mobile phone? Reader Will writes:

I can never remember which number (1-9) I've assigned for my friends on my cell phone. So I went into Photoshop, made a simple but stylish background and put 9 pictures of each of my friends (from their MySpaces - I shamefully admit) in a 3x3 grid corresponding to their assigned speed dial number!

Set that puppy as your phone's wallpaper and you've got a grid of friends just ready to speed dial up. Thanks, Will!

Mac OS X only: Freeware Doodim darkens all the applications in the background of your Mac to highlight whatever you're working on in the foreground.

Especially useful for apps like Photoshop that can have several, separate windows, Doodim looks like a great focusing tool. Darken the background all the way to black as well, to really zone in on only your working application. Doodim is a free download, Mac OS X only.

Getting Things Done on Windows and the web

The Download Squad blog compares and contrasts doing GTD with Windows software or with free webapps.

From Microsoft Outlook add-ins and Gmail to PocketPC apps and the mobile versions of Backpack, this is a nice overview of two approaches to a desktop or web-based GTD system. What are the active GTD'ers out there using to implement their system? Deskop software, webapps, or text files and index cards? Let us know in the comments or to tips at lifehacker.com.

The interface looks and feels like PopUrls, right down to the lack of an RSS feed. However, it's a nice way to get group headlines at a glance - just plop it into your browser toolbar and keep checking back. One nice thing - you can rearrange the blog modules to appear in whatever order floats your boat on the page.

Web site Wisegeek has an interesting guide to 200 calories, with pictures of 200 calorie portions of foods ranging from cheeseburgers and fries to carrots and celery.

The gallery is arranged by mass, and each picture shows the portion size on the same plate. Celery and mini peppers win the top spots, with butter and canola oil bringing up the rear. If eating healthy is on your list of New Year's todos, Wisegeek's visual guide to 200 calories is a great place to get a handle on your portions

Create smart sets in Flickr with SmartSetr

smartsetr.png

Web site SmartSetr lets you create smart sets for your Flickr account based on predefined criteria, like tags, text, date taken, or date uploaded.

In a nutshell, SmartSetr works a lot like iTunes Smart playlists - but for your Flickr account. This is an incredible tool for any prolific tagger and lover of advanced filtering, providing a quick and easy way to create image sets when you already know which tags, for example, you'd like to include. As of this writing, you have to manually refresh the smart sets through SmartSetr if you want it to update a set with the latest images, but the app's author claims automatic updates are on the way - meaning dynamic, smart Flickr sets aren't far away. Flickr lovers rejoice! SmartSetr is free, requires read-write access to your Flickr account.
