First, there's the paradox of choice. In a media-saturated world where you see and hear about so many people doing so much interesting stuff day in and day out, it's even more difficult to settle down on one pursuit than it was 10 to 20 years ago, when people simply didn't have as many options. With so many things out there you could do, so much greener grass over the fence taunting you, it feels almost impossible to commit. Choosing one thing really means you're not choosing a million others, and for those of us with trouble in the commitment department, that can keep us being goal gigolos well into adulthood.

The first arises from the fact that prices for commodities, including oil as well as most ag commodities, are typically quoted in $US....In substantive terms, the increase in $US commodity prices is a big problem for the many Asian economies that have pursued some kind of peg to the $US as a means of maintaining export competitiveness. The adverse impact on domestic consumers is now becoming obvious, and the only solution is to abandon the dollar peg and allow an appreciation. China is already moving in this direction.

A second important point is the impact of demand from the biofuel sector, particularly for corn in the US. The idea of making biofuels from food crops was always problematic and the subsidy regime in the US makes it more so. The current food crisis should make subsidies for food-based biofuels politically and economically untenable, pushing the industry away from this easy short term solution and in the direction of sources such as switch grass, grown on marginal or non-arable land.

Finally, the biggest increases have been in wheat prices, reflecting the drought in Australia and in some other wheat producing countries (Kazakstan?). It seems likely, though it’s still impossible to prove, that human-induced climate change is increasing the frequency and severity of drought. So, it’s important not to regard climate change as a problem for the future. In all probability, adverse effects are already here.

Finance Minister Audley Shaw told the House that the low demand for bauxite on the international market makes it a strong possibility that production in the sector could be reduced, which could mean less money for the fund.

Pitanje je to koje muči jednu našu blogericu. Današnja priča preuzeta je sa http://lolek.studosfera.com.

Već nekoliko dana razmišljam o tome o čemu bi mogla pisati i ništa mi nije padalo na pamet. To me čak i počelo pomalo brinuti. Mislila sam kako o čemu god da pišem drugima to neće biti zanimljivo kao sto je meni. I tako razmišljajući javi mi se prijatelj koji je trebao moju pomoć.

Bivša cura mu prijeti samoubojstvom i ne zna što da radi. Šalje mu poruke kako je on jedini kojeg je ona voljela i da njen život sada kada je on prekinuo s njom više nema smisla. Cura ima 17 godina i ovako razmišlja. Ja to ne shvaćam i nikad neću. Dati svoj život zbog neke budale koja te nije znala cijeniti??

Mnogo mladih si oduzima život zbog ovakvih gluposti. Ne stanu na tren i zapitaju se koliko je vrijedan život i koliko bi netko dao da je na njihovom mjestu. Toliko gorih problema u svijetu ima. Ljudi umiru od svakakvih bolesti, a zdravi si zbog nepromišljenosti oduzimaju život.. Zašto?? Da mi je biti na tren u njihovoj koži da pokušam shvatiti. Njihov je život tek započeo, a oni ga već žele završiti jer nema smisla živjeti bez određenog dečka. Dečki dolaze i odlaze, a život je jedan.

Strašna je činjenica da je suicid treći uzrok smrti kod osoba između 15 i 24 godine. Isto tako više od polovine srednjoškolaca pomislilo je na samoubojstvo, a suicidalne misli postaju nenormalne kada ostvarenje ovih misli postane jedini izlaz iz teškoća koje imaju. Ljubavni problemi, problemi u školi, a i problemi unutar obitelji su razlog ovakvog čina.

Uspjeli smo pomoći curi da se smiri i dobro razmisli o svemu još jednom, ali uvijek će postojati ta trunčica straha i pitanje da li se uistinu smirila i shvatila pogrešku koju bi učinila. Jer ako je jednom pomislila na samoubojstvo, zašto ne bi opet? A ako bude opet, tko će biti tamo da je zaustavi?

Plurk比Twitter最大的優點，就是其SEO做得沒那麼好，因此在Plurk上發過的訊息及說過的話並不易透過Search Engine找出來。加上我在Plurk上遇見的話題多是比較Causal與Personal，也就較易把朋友的視線吸引過來聊天。而且因為其不太好的SEO功能，令我們聊的內容不會這麼易被公開(雖然它的本質就是公開)。

Plurk比Twitter立體，按時間軸分了Thread，讓我們易於Follow及參與朋友的討論，令討論氣氛更加熱熾。Twitter沒有那麼立體，沒有Thread，但亦令其溝通比較簡單直接，令我很易可以用Google Talk甚至Twitterfox來更新；相反Plurk又很難透過IM來更新。

還有不得不提的是Karma這個因素。不少玩Plurk的朋友，都會不期然追Karma，為得更多Emoticon或者可以更改版面。這也令Plurk多了一些為Post而Post的無聊訊息。

Water is one of the most abundant resources on earth, but if you're just using it to drink, you don't use much of its potential. When people invented rafts and boats a whole new world, literally, opened up to them. They all of a sudden didn't have to see expanses of water as impediments to getting to the other side, and once navigation was thus discovered, waterways and seas became the most important transportation routes upon which empires were built. There is something similar going on with the way we use information. Homo sapiens of today hasn't quite figured out what to do with the oceans of information available to him, other than 'by the drink' - by reading articles. There remains an enormous amount of "unknown knowns" if we do not find a way to do more with information than read articles and books, or consult databases. We have to develop ways of extracting knowledge out of large amounts of information. We have to invent the equivalents of rafts and boats to navigate information. And still read, but manageable amounts (after all, we still drink, too). Some people deplore the fact that more and more information becomes available. They even extend that to open access. If indeed the only thing one can imagine doing with it is read ('drink'), then solutions are being sought in selection, in limiting access, in having the choices made by others. But if one can imagine truly navigating the ever growing seas of information, the verb will not be to deplore the abundance, but instead, to explore it.

Assign separate scores to "Twelfth Night Themes," "Twelfth Night Vocabulary," and "Twelfth Night [whatever else it is you English teachers do]," scores which can be targeted and remediated individually.

My assessment policy needs to incentivize your own remediation. How many students will put in the effort to remediate their skills if the reward isn't tangible and immediate? Traditionally, what do you have? The promise that your studying here at lunch is really gonna pay off on the next test? Which is in three weeks. The student's like, awesome, glad I came in.

The fundamental issue in India is the risk/reward equation. It is simply too easy for a young developer in India to get paid a lot by an outsourcing firm; then enjoy being headhunted every year for more money. Those of us old enough to see a cycle or two, can see the parallels between Silicon Valley 1999 and Bangalore 2007, when just being able to spell the words of a popular programming language on a Resume meant fame and fortune. It is possible that when this comes back to some reality the motivation to innovate will come to young Indian developers (yes young; breakthrough technical innovation tends to come from people under 30).

When the originator has won in the USA they use IPO cash/equity to buy up the local players, which is a good result for all. There is less easy money in these deals now as Web 2.0 start-ups either need less localization, or they figure out those issues upfront, leaving less time for a local clone to get traction
