FreeNAS is a FreeBSD based Network-Attached Storage server, supporting FTP, NFS, RSYNC, iSCSI, CIFS (Samba) and more... It takes less than 32MB installed, and can run from a USB key to allow you to take full advantage of your harddrive space for backup.  It has software RAID support for best performance and backup as well as a full web-configuration interface.
