There are two main distinctions between the GS500 and the GS400: noise and sharpness. The GS400’s video shows a noticeable amount of chunky noise. I use the word “chunky” to differentiate it from the GS500, which has noise of a much finer grain.

For the picture quality that you get in a camcorder this small is a bargain for 999 dollars retail and obviously you can get one for at least 200 less. I would have a hard time deciding between this camcorder and the HC3 but at least Panasonic did include a focusing ring. If you want to see true replacements to the GS400 and the HC1, just wait until you see the first Sony and Panasonic camcorders that records on the AVCHD format. They will be revolutionary.
