Spotlight: The trial of the Chicago Eight began on this date in 1969. Abbie Hoffman, Jerry Rubin, Tom Hayden, Rennie Davis, David Dellinger, John Froines, Lee Weiner and Bobby Seale were tried on charges of conspiracy and inciting to riot during violent anti-Vietnam War protests in Chicago in 1968, at the time of the Democratic National Primary. When Seale was particularly abusive in the courtroom, Judge Julius Hoffman sentenced him to four years in jail for contempt of court. Five of the defendants were convicted of crossing state lines to incite a riot; the decision was reversed on appeal in 1972.
