Interesting documentary on austic savants.  Daniel Tammet is one particular exceptional case.  In addition to being able to perform amazing calculations in his head, including reciting 22,500 digits of pi, he also has normal social skills, which is rare in cases of autism.

Around 17:00 is very interesting as Daniel explains how he experiences numbers as having shape, texture, sound, and personality.  He says he experiences every number up to 10,000 in this way.  What can happen is neighboring regions of the brain can be share  too many connections.   in this case the "number" area of the brain being crossed with the area responsible for shape and texture, allowing him to intuitively feel numbers, which makes it easier to remember them..
