@Jake, yes, stereotypes exist for a reason, but that doesn't mean that every member of the group being stereotyped fits the label. The only way to know for sure is to observe or get to know the individual. But that's too difficult for most people because allowing themselves to acknowledge the stereotype isn't objectively true opens up the possibility that they might be wrong about other things. It's a courageous, conscious and tiring effort to NOT stereotype and most people just don't want to try. - Lindsay Donaghe
