First, because they are on the Web, they are accessible anywhere with an Internet connection. Second, these applications have been made to work with Microsoft Office. So, you can import and export Word (.doc) files with these applications. Lastly, these applications can be shared with others. So, a number of individuals can work on a common document without having to pass the document around. The documents stay in one place.
