You are correct. However, this method only works if both machines are using ACPI HALs or both are using non-ACPI HALs. In other words, the method I think you are speaking of only lets you switch between uni- and multi-processor HALs. The most common method is to use an ACPI multi-processor HAL as a source machine and then let the target machine update to an ACPI uni-processor HAL if necessary. To do this, add this to your Sysprep.inf file:
